Kesho continues to support children to achieve competence in reading fluency, pronunciation and comprehension of English and Kiswahili languages. According to Uwezo report (2015) 8 out of 100 children in grade 8 can not do class 2 work. This means some children graduate from primary schools without achieving key literacy skills. Kesho believes in education, and our literacy and academic support programme is designed to help children achieve their optimum academic capacity. we believe that a child who can read and comprehend the language of instruction is a better learner. As such, we are expanding our reading support to 180 nursery children in 3 schools with Kilifi. These are children who are expected to transit to class one next year.



“My first days at primary school were so long!!! The early mornings, longer class sessions and complex English words in every subject taught, not very appealing. I nostalgically missed nursery school but there was no going back. I was determined to beat the odds and progress well through school and maintain good grades in each subject,” Salama KG3 teacher.


Perhaps this is how every one would describe those days but for a child who can not read and comprehend the medium of instruction is more disadvantaged.

Our reading support exists for this reason. It entails reading one on one with those with dire reading gaps. We have also been paring more fluent readers with struggling readers for the purposes of nurturing  peer support and team learning.

In partnership with class teachers we have been able to identify reading and comprehension levels of all the 180 children. It has been an eye opener to the teachers and they now know the kind of interventions each individual child requires. It is for the very first time that these teachers have comprehensive reading data of all their students and thus able to make informed decisions when it comes to choice of teaching methodologies. we are determined to fast tracking all children who were found to be pre reading after taking the test.
